Renée Nicole Good

Renée Nicole Good was thirty seven years old, a mother of three, a poet, and someone who had just begun a new chapter in Minneapolis. She was shot and killed by a federal immigration agent while present at an ICE operation in her neighborhood. Federal officials described her as a threat. City leaders and her family described her as a legal observer, someone there to witness, not to harm. Her death has sparked protests across the country, with many calling for justice and transparency as conflicting accounts continue to unfold.

Those who loved Renee speak of her gentleness before anything else. She was a writer who made messy art with her children, a hobby guitarist, a woman who studied creative writing and once won a national poetry prize.

She had worked various jobs over the years but had most recently devoted herself to raising her children. Her family says she lived by compassion, teaching her son and teenagers that kindness mattered, that everyone deserved dignity. Her mother called her one of the kindest people she had ever known. Her wife said she was pure love and pure joy. In the midst of political arguments about what happened, her family has asked that people remember the person she was, not the labels placed on her.

In this project, her portrait holds space for that humanity, for the poet and mother whose life was rooted in care.

For the clearest detail and strongest finished piece, I recommend using cardstock and a cutting machine. Cardstock provides the stability needed to hold the fine lines and structure of the design.
